Schalke have endured a disappointing league campaign and find themselves in 14th place in the Bundesliga. Domenico Tedesco’s side have failed to find the spark that saw them finish second last season, but the side have favoured cup competitions this year.
Here’s how Tedesco’s side could line up against Man City.
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Ralph Fährmann (GK): Solid as a rock, Fährmann has been keeping Schalke’s defence at ease for seasons, but he may be in for a tough night when Manchester City’s attackers visit on Wednesday.
Daniel Caligiuri (RB): The Italian has made the right back position his own this season and should return to the side for the Champions League clash.
Salif Sane (CB): Schalke’s big signing in the summer has played in every Bundesliga game for the club this season since joining from Hannover 96.
Matija Nastasic (CB): The former Man City player was tipped to shine in the Premier League but failed to adapt to the English game. The Serbian has been been a key player at the Veltins since he signed in 2015.
Bastian Oczipka (LB): The left back has started every game since recovering from groin surgery.
Nabil Bentaleb (CM): Bentaleb has been the main man in Schalke’s midfield this season. The Algerian has scored all six of the penalties he has taken this year.
Weston McKennie (CM): The young American has a bright future ahead, as he is viewed by the club as the successor to Leon Goretzka.
Amine Harit (RM): The Moroccan hasn’t been able to show the same form that made him a key player in Schalke’s success last season. Harit should make his first start since December.
Ahmed Kutucu (CAM): The 18-year-old was promoted to the first time after 12 goals in 12 games for Schalke’s Under-19 team. He has scored three times in seven appearances for the first team.
Yevehn Konoplyanka (LM): Konoplyanka should return to the starting line up for Wednesday night. The Ukrainian has struggled for minutes in the Bundesliga this season but featured in five of Schalke’s UCL group stage matches.
Guido Burgstaller (ST): The Austrian should return to the starting lineup following a spell on the sidelines. Burgstaller missed nine games over the winter period with an achilles injury.
